The Civic Center has partnered with KultureCity to become a Certified Sensory Inclusive Venue. This initiative will promote an accommodating and positive experience for all patrons with a sensory issue.
Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD, and other similar conditions. Overstimulation and noise can be a major barrier for people with sensory sensitivities, which are both part of the environment of a performing arts center like the Civic Center Music Hall.
The certification process entailed Civic Center staff and volunteers being trained by leading medical professionals on how torecognize those patrons with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation. The venue now has signs indicating Quiet Areas for patrons who may be experiencing overstimulation, and patrons will be able to check out Sensory Bags from our Patron Services Desk. Sensory bags contain noise-cancelling headphones, a KCVIP lanyard, fidget tools, and a sensory communication card.
Prior to attending an event, families can download the free KultureCity App where they can view available amenities and where to access them. Additionally, the app includes a social story which will preview what to expect when enjoying a show at the Civic Center.
