A two-week celebration of the Native American playwright, OKCTC presents the fourth annual Native American New Play Festival. In addition to staged readings of new plays and a fully-produced staging of CHALK IN THE RAIN by Bret Jones, this year we'll be including a sampling other Native artistry including singers, visual artists, and "Indian" cuisine. This year since the second weekend of the Festival falls on the anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing, we will be presenting a special performance of a monologue entitled "Sparrow" by Native playwright Vicki Lynn Mooney which memorializes that historical event. Since encouraging Native artists is what the Festival is all about, we'll continue to provide several opportunities for interaction between audience and the artists for feedback and question/answer panel discussions with the playwrights. Please note: CHALK IN THE RAIN closes on April 20th. |

OKC Civic Center Music Hall - Oklahoma City Thelma Gaylord Performing Arts Theatre Presented by Celebrity Attractions Jan 15,2013-Jan 20th, 2013
Two red-hot stars. One cold-blooded thriller! American Idol finalist and Tony nominee Constantine Maroulis (Rock of Ages) and Grammy nominee and Canadian R&B superstar Deborah Cox bring their soulful vocals and smoldering sexiness to Jekyll & Hyde, the classic tale of good and evil. After four thrilling, chilling years on Broadway and multiple worldwide tours, this dark and dangerous love story from Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse returns in a stunning new production that is touring the U.S. before heading to Broadway this spring. The show's popular songs (“This Is the Moment,” “A New Life,” “Someone Like You”) have been reinterpreted to suit the powerful and contemporary vocal stylings of Cox and Maroulis, but the story, based on Robert Louis Stevenson's classic novella, remains unchanged: a devoted man of science tries out experimental treatments on himself, unleashing his inner demons. |

 | October 20 - October 21 DIRECTOR'S CHOICE
OKC Civic Center Music Hall Thelma Gaylord Performing ArtsTheatre Presented by The Oklahoma City Ballet Oct 20-21
Anthony Tudor has been hailed a genius of modern expression, a creator of austerity, elegance and nobility. The bittersweet theme of Lilac Garden (Jardin aux Lilas) is set in the gracious, Edwardian era. A young woman betrothed to a man she does not want to marry, mirrors the society in which power and position are uppermost. Set to music by Ernest Chausson, Lilac Garden is performed by many of the greatest ballet companies in the world. Of Left Unsaid, The New York Times hailed Nicolo Fonte "a choreographer worth knowing". Dance Europe called Left Unsaid "inventive, creating expressive original shapes built on an undercurrent of implicit human relationships". Nicolo Fonte is known for his daring and original approach to dance. His work has been noted by critics for a unique movement language as well as a highly developed fusion of ideas, dance and design. Fonte's work is in the repertoires of ballet companies around the world. Set to the driving rhythms of Astor Piazzolla, Margo Sappington's Cobras in the Moonlight is an exciting, sultry piece of choreography originally premiered by Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. A Tony nominated choreographer and former dancer with the Joffrey Ballet, Sappington's witty and ingenious work has been seen around the globe. |

Rose State College Performing Arts Theatre Midwest City, Oklahoma Presenter: Rose State Live Show Dates: Sunday, October 7, 7:30PM 2012
A protégé of the legendary jazz master Dizzy Gillespie, Sandoval was born in Artemisa, a small town in the outskirts of Havana, Cuba, on November 6, 1949, just two years after Gillespie became the first musician to bring Latin influences into American Jazz. Sandoval began studying classical trumpet at the age of twelve, but it didn’t take him long to catch the excitement of the jazz world. He has since evolved into one of the world’s most acknowledged guardians of jazz trumpet and flugel horn, as well as a renowned classical artist, pianist and composer. He is one of the most dynamic and vivacious live performers of our time, and has been seen by millions in the Oscars and Grammy Awards performing with Celine Dione, Justin Timberlake as well as on the Latin Billboard Awards with the gifted Alicia Keys, where he was awarded his 6th Billboard Awards for “Best Latin Jazz Album”. Sandoval has been awarded 6 Grammy Awards, and nominated 12 times; he has also received 6 Billboard Awards and one Emmy Award. The latter for his composing work on the entire underscore of the HBO movie based on his life, “For Love or Country” starring Andy Garcia. He is currently working on two new albums, “Tribute to Dizzy Gillespie” and “ Tangos “, along with working on a new book chronicling his relationship with Dizzy Gillespie. Arturo Sandoval’s versatility can be heard on recordings with everyone from Dizzy Gillespie, Woody Herman, Woody Shaw, Michel Legrand, Bill Conti, and Stan Getz to Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra, Paul Anka, Rod Stewart and Alicia Keys amongst many others. Arturo Sandoval reaches beyond the scope of mere effort. His struggles while in Cuba and since his defection have given him more energy and strength, urging him to accomplish and surpass his childhood dreams. Filled with a virtuoso capability, he desires nothing more than to share his gift with others who feel the same intense adoration for music as he does. |

OKC Civic Center Music Hall Freede Little Theatre Presenter: CityRep Theatre Show Dates:
May 19 | 7:30 p.m. May 20 | 1:30 p.m.
Completely Hollywood (abridged) Written by Reed Martin & Austin Tichenor Additional Material by Dominic Conti Two shows only on Saturday, May 19 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, May 20 at 1:30 pm. These Boobs Are Real. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the theater…the Reduced Shakespeare Company boldly goes where few would dare -Tinseltown! America’s “bad boys of abridgement” take on America’s largest cultural and economic export (well, except for weapons) in this seriously silly show biz satire. Get your clapper boards ready! The RSC rummage through the reels and flick through the films in this riotous carnival of the classics. Giving Hollywood more than just a nip and a tuck, they cut through the celluloid to condense the 186 greatest films in Hollywood’s over-100 year history into a complete compilation of classic cinematic cliches – plus a few brand new cliches they just made up. They’ve gone Biblical, they’ve gone historical, now the RSC has gone Completely Hollywood… abridged, of course! Lights! Camera! REDUCTION! “(This) smart, timely satire sent a Kennedy Center audience into regular peals of near-hysterical laughter.” The Washington Post “One of the greatest, sustained pieces of physical comedy I have ever seen. There are brilliant pieces of comic invention. Go see. Buy tickets now.” BBC “You’ll nearly fall out of your theater seat laughing. Spectacularly high energy… an absolute scream!” The Arizona Republic “One of the funniest troupes in American theater today!” St. Louis Post-Dispatch “Break-neck, ingenious compendium of filmmaking’s 100-plus-year history!” Howard Sherman, Executive Director of the American Theatre Wing “Hilarious!” London Sunday Mail “A hilarious and speedy take on Hollywood’s highs and lows. I loved it! An instant classic! Hurray for Hollywood, and hurray for the Reduced Shakespeare Company!” BBC |
 | May 17 - May 18 The Complete History of Sports (abridged)
OKC Civic Center Music Hall Freede Little Theatre Presenter: CityRep Theatre Show Dates: - May 17 | 7:30 p.m. May 18 | 7:30 p.m.
The Complete World of Sports (abridged) Written and Directed by Reed Martin & Austin Tichenor Two shows only on Thursday, May 17 at 7:30 pm and Friday, May 18 at 7:30 pm. “Owes as much to the insanity of Monty Python as to the inanity of actual sports programs.” Boston Globe “I loved it! It is smart, funny – even unexpectedly insightful and moving.” Scott Simon, National Public Radio “Is there anything these men can’t reduce? It’s a deceptively exhaustive tour, its intellectual rigor leavened by silliness of the first degree.” Variety “A comical analysis of sports’ childish side. (This) parody of ESPN’s “SportsCenter”… is pitched directly and proudly at the juvenile in sports fans of all ages.” New York Times “Faster than a speeding punchline, as silly as Monty Python, and with satiric spice flavoring its comedic candy.” Pittsburgh City Paper In this merciless but affectionate satire, The Reduced Shakespeare company sets it comic sites on the lunacy of sports. The result is a tour-de-farce of vaudevillian physical comedy that will delight every non-sports fan in the family. “The Complete World of Sports (abridged)” is an audience-interactive, family-friendly show for all ages, “blending slapstick, sight gags, hernia-inducing puns, and genuine verbal wit.” (Boston Globe) and has been featured in both ESPN and American Theatre magazines! As one critic wrote, “I hate sports, but I couldn’t stop laughing from the moment the RSC took the stage!” The bad boys of abridgement are back! So Get Ready! Get Set! LET THE GAMES BEGIN! “Delicious anarchy.” Washington Examiner ” The pacing and timing a crackerjack. It’s hard not to grin all night, so give ‘em a medal. Who’s gonna beat their time in a comic sprint?” Washington Post “A fast-moving and deeply funny farrago, a neo-vaudevillian sendup that manages to be both merciless and affectionate.” Boston Globe “The RSC tear into their heady task with childlike glee. I was delighted by the fusion of highbrow and lowbrow humor informed by an obvious affection for the subject matter. I am relieved to see that the RSC’s signature style and quality have endured and flourished in this new production.” DC Theatre Scene |
 | May 08 An Evening with Garrison Keillor
OKC Civic Center Music Hall - Oklahoma City Theatre Presenter: KOSU Show Date:
May 8 | 7:30 p.m.
If you showed up on July 6, 1974, at the Janet Wallace Auditorium at Macalester College in Saint Paul and plunked down your $1 admission (50 cents for kids) to attend the very first broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion, you were in select company. There were about 12 people in the audience. But those in attendance thought there were worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon, so Garrison Keillor and the APHC team went on to produce close to 500 live shows in the first 10 years alone. There were broadcasts from this venue and that, until March 4, 1978, when the show moved to The World Theater, a lovely, crumbling building that was one plaster crack away from the wrecking ball. (Now fully renovated and renamed The Fitzgerald, it is the show's home base.)
In June of 1987, APHC ended for a while. Garrison thought it was a good idea at the time, but only two years later, the show was back, based in New York and called American Radio Company of the Air. But there's no place like home. So in 1992, it was back to Minnesota and, soon after, back to the old name: A Prairie Home Companion.
There has been plenty of adventure in the past 30-plus years — broadcasts from Canada, Ireland, Scotland, England, Germany, Iceland and almost every one of the 50 states; wonderful performers, little-known and world-renowned; standing ovations and stares of bewilderment. We've missed planes, coped with lost luggage, dodged swooping bats and hungry mosquitoes, plodded through blizzards, and flown by the seat of our pants.
Today, A Prairie Home Companion is heard by 4 million listeners each week on more than 600 public radio stations, and abroad on America One and the Armed Forces Networks in Europe and the Far East. Garrison recalls, "When the show started, it was something funny to do with my friends, and then it became an achievement that I hoped would be successful, and now it's a good way of life."
A Prairie Home Companion is produced by Prairie Home Productions, and distributed nationwide by American Public Media. The program is underwritten by Allianz and Ford.

 | April 10 Bela Fleck & The Flecktones
Rose State Performing Arts Theatre Presenter: Rose State Live Show Date: April 10 | 8:00 p.m.
Groundbreaking banjoist/composer/bandleader Béla Fleck has reconvened the original Béla Fleck & The Flecktones', the extraordinary initial line-up of his incredible combo. Rocket Science marks the first recording by the first fab four Flecktones in almost two decades, with pianist/harmonica player Howard Levy back in the fold alongside Fleck, bassist Victor Wooten, and percussionist/ Drumitarist Roy “Futureman” Wooten. Far from being a wistful trip back in time, the album sees the Grammy Award-winning quartet creating some of the most forward thinking music of their long, storied career. While all manners of genres come into play – from classical and jazz to bluegrass and African music to electric blues and Eastern European folk dances – the result is an impossible to pigeonhole sound all their own, a meeting of musical minds that remains, as ever, utterly indescribable. Fleck first united the Flecktones in 1988, ostensibly for a single performance on PBS’ Lonesome Pine Special. From the start, there was a special kinship between the four musicians, a bond forged in a mutual passion for creativity and artistic advancement. Three breakthrough albums and a whole lot of live dates followed before Levy decided to move on in late 1992. Béla Fleck & the Flecktones persevered, playing as a trio and with many special guests, before saxophonist Jeff Coffin joined the ensemble. A succession of acclaimed albums and innumerable live performances continued to earn the band a fervent fan following around the world, not to mention five Grammy Awards in a range of categories. For many Flecktones fans, the return of the original line-up allows a chance to see a band that many had never gotten to witness before. Visionary and vibrant as anything in their already rich canon, Rocket Science feels more like a new beginning than simply the culmination of an early chapter. Where the band goes from here remains undetermined, but all four members agree that the promise of Béla Fleck & the Original Flecktones has yet to be fulfilled. “We’re going to have to have this experience together and see how everybody likes it,” Fleck says. “I know that we haven’t even come close to exhausting the possibilities with this record, but we sure went deeper than we ever had before.” |

It is Krauss’ first release since her 2007 internationally acclaimed, multi-platinum collaboration with Robert Plant, Raising Sand, which won six Grammys including “Record Of The Year” and “Album Of The Year.” Alison Krauss along with Union Station band members Dan Tyminski (guitar, mandolin and lead vocals), Barry Bales (bass and harmony vocals), Ron Block (banjo, guitar and harmony vocals), and Jerry Douglas (Dobro and harmony vocals) are continuing their tour in 2012 after a successful run of critically-acclaimed performances in 2011. A highly sought-after collaborator, Krauss has worked with some of the biggest names in popular music, including James Taylor, Phish, Dolly Parton, Yo Yo Ma & Bonnie Raitt. Since signing with Rounder Records at the age of 14 in 1985 Krauss has sold in excess of 12 million albums and garnered 26 Grammy® Awards, the most for any female and the third most of any recording artist in Grammy® history. | January 26 Lewis Black
Rose State Performing Arts Theatre Show Date: January 26 | 8:00 p.m.
Rose State Performing Arts Theatre
George Carlin, Larry King and Jules Feiffer love Lewis Black. They love him because his insights and love/hate relationship with America are brilliantly expressed in his concerts and TV appearances worldwide. How can you not love a man who says, "Republicans are a party with bad ideas and Democrats are a party with no ideas." Will Rogers would have been proud.
Lewis is one of the most prolific and popular performers working today. He executes a brilliant trifecta as stand-up comedian, actor and author. Receiving critical acclaim, he performs over 200 nights a year to sold out audiences throughout Europe, New Zealand, Canada and The United States. He is one of few performers to sell out multiple, renowned theatres, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Brooks Atkinson Theatre, New York City Center and the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. In August 2007, he was the first stand-up comedian to ever perform in concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.
Lewis’ live performances provide a cathartic release of anger and disillusionment for his audience. Lewis yells so they don’t have to. A passionate performer who is more pissed-off optimist than mean-spirited curmudgeon. Lewis is the rare comic who can cause an audience to laugh themselves into incontinence while making compelling points about the absurdity of our world. |

 | January 12 Tyler Perry's - The Haves and the Have Nots
OKC Civic Center Music Hall Presenter: Peachez Show Date:
January 12 | 7:30 p.m.
Our story opens very early on a Monday morning, at the home of Grandma Hattie Mae. Hattie has allowed her daughter and son in law to move into her home with their son Wallie. The morning silence is broken by the ring of the telephone. Hattie is afraid to answer. The bank has given her three days to pay up the mortgage, or the struggling family will be evicted. Tensions are rising for Frank who feels responsible as the man of the house. Frank has been out of work for months, causing the family to be supported by the sole income of Rose who works as a maid for a wealthy real estate giant, Louis Willis. After months of avoiding phone calls from the bank, Frank finally gets a break when Louis hires him to be a handyman at the Willis estate. Rose is elated that her prayers have finally been answered. Frank is cautiously optimistic, but excitedly prepares for his new job as a handyman. That morning at the Willis home, Floyd, played by Palmer Williams Jr., is hilariously negative about Rose allowing Frank to work for the wealthy couple. Floyd is convinced that Louis’ much younger wife, Diane, will snatch Frank right from under Rose’s nose. It soon becomes painfully clear that Floyd’s madness was not craziness at all. Diane goes after Frank the moment she sees him. Rose is completely unaware of the depths to which her boss Diane will stoop when trying to satisfy her insatiable appetite for strapping young men. While Rose and Frank consume themselves with saving the home that Hattie has lived in for over thirty years, Wallie has been deeply affected by the fears of being homeless. Only Hattie is aware that Wallie has been running the streets at night. It is not until Wallie is arrested for shoplifting that Rose discovers that her honor roll son has decided to walk a different path. Frank and Wallie finally face off when Frank overhears his son lashing out about how Frank is a sorry husband and father. Wallie has learned on the streets that all men have a side hustle, and are always able to support their families. It is a bitter pill to swallow when Frank realizes that his son has lost respect for him, and blames him for the family’s impending doom. It is under these circumstances that the struggling family will have to pray for a miracle when their worlds begin to spiral out of control. Hattie, an old woman who has survived a mountain of challenges, finds herself more afraid than she has ever been. Rose, the strong and virtuous matriarch of her family, stands firmly on her faith when she tells Hattie that she has to meet God for the first time. At the end of her rope, Hattie lifts her arms in a miraculous and desperate show of faith and power. It will take both of the women to battle the principalities coming against their family unit. Meanwhile Frank is put in a treacherous situation when Diane maligns Rose with lies and deceit, while offering to write a check to Frank in exchange for sexual favors. Frank is tested like never before when he is presented by an opportunity to save his family by betraying the sacred relationship he has with his wife. Frank’s impeccable character lifts him out of the situation in time to discover that Wallie has become a money making drug dealer. When Frank finally discovers the stacks of cash and drugs, he is ready to give everything he has to fight for his son’s life. Wallie has been so brainwashed by the streets that it will take the strength and love of a tough father to win the heart of his son back to the principles he was raised with. It almost appears that Diane may have been successful in breaking up a happy home when Louis finally sees his young wife for what she is. Troubled by the truth, Louis must make the hardest decision he has ever had to make. Seeing the love that Frank and Rose have for one another, Louis intervenes to help the couple who are about to lose everything they have. In doing so, Louis experiences firsthand the power and the beauty of a family’s love. Tyler Perry’s “The Haves And The Have Nots” is a powerful story of love and honor told with honesty and brutal truth. The show features powerful new music written by Tyler Perry, and a cast of extraordinary singers and actors who make the evening a heartfelt experience. Hattie, played by Patrice Lovely, and Palmer Williams Jr. as Floyd offer up enough laughs to keep audiences chucking for the rest of the year.

Rose State Performing Arts Theatre Show Date:
December 8 | 7:30 p.m.
GROUP ORDERS CANNOT BE MADE ONLINE. THEY MUST BE PURCHASED BY CALLING 405-297-2264 (GROUPS OF 10 OR MORE)
If laughter is truly the best medicine, then Dennis Swanberg, America's "Minister of Encouragement" is just what the doctor ordered. With his down-home charm and heaping helping of hospitality, this Austin, Texas born pastor-turned-comedian has won the hearts of audiences across the country. Raised in what he calls a "mostly blue-collar, but sometimes ring-around-the collar" family during the fifties, that old black and white television in the corner of the living room became an important part of making Swanberg the success he is today. "Most moms yell at kids to go outside and play", he remembers with a laugh, "My mom would say, 'you sit there and watch that television - your daddy worked so hard for it!'" her "encouragement's" paid off One of the first voices the future impersonator nailed as a child was his television hero, Barney Fife, from "The Andy Griffith Show."
Today Swanberg takes Barney Fife and over twenty other lovable impersonations, together with his side-splitting stories of growing up, families, and the funny side of church, to over 250,000 people every year. His audiences range from churches looking for fresh and new inspiration, to marriage enrichment seminars, city-wide concerts, business related events and corporate gatherings. Dennis Swanberg doesn’t care who he’s talking to, as long as he can leave knowing he made someone’s day a little brighter.
The story is typical of Dennis' ability to take everyday life with it's ups and downs and turn it into an act that's more than just an act. As a motivational speaker, teacher, preacher, author, counselor, TV personality, and humorist, Dennis Swanberg knows just what it takes to make life a more pleasant road to journey down - with a laugh or two along the way.
"I try to bring people laughter, but my advice to them is always that joy is a choice. Happiness is dependent upon what happens in your life, but joy is a choice you can make every single day. It takes an act of your will...even if you don't feel joyful at the moment. And it takes dying to yourself and coming alive in the lives of others around you. I want to motivate my audiences to have courage, to be strong, to look for the moments in life that make them realize they are an important part of this world. Do your best to go out there risking. We live in a world where you can afford to fail and try again. I want people to realize that this is a great life to enjoy. And the one way you can enjoy life is by helping other people enjoy it too." Looks like this doctor of encouragement writes his own prescriptions. |

 | October 29 Soul of Fire, The Musical
Rose State Performing Arts Theatre Show Date:
October 29 | 8:00 p.m.
SOUL ON FIRE is a haunting musical about a young girl who decides to take matters into her own hands when justice refuses to serve her. Broken and desperate, Kisha must prove her story is true: she was raped by a popular political figure who, in the eyes of her family and utopian community, can do no wrong. The musical addresses the societal values placed upon a small group of people who are not what they seem and call themselves “one big family.” SOUL ON FIRE is a tale of hope for all who have endured the aftermath of rape and abuse, and for families and communities who feel beyond the reach of healing. The music infuses rich and diverse genres with cutting-edge dialogue as it explores the powers of the spirit realm through the mind of a young woman scorned. It is the battle of good and evil; of angels and demons; the choice of love versus hate; or forgiveness and redemption; forbidden love; and of secrets and lies, all woven in a web of hypocrisy and devious ambitions. The story of Kisha is the story of many who never tell. Break the Silence. |

Rose State Performing Arts Theatre Presenter: OK Mozart Show Dates:
June 15 | 8:00 p.m.
In the summer and fall of 2005, three young black musicians, Dom Flemons, Rhiannon Giddens, and Justin Robinson, made the commitment to travel to Mebane, N.C., every Thursday night to sit in the home of old-time fiddler Joe Thompson for a musical jam session. Joe was in his 80’s, a black fiddler with a short bowing style that he inherited from generations of family musicians. He had learned to play a wide ranging set of tunes sitting on the back porch with other players after a day of field work. Now he was passing those same lessons on to a new generation. When the three students decided to form a band, they didn’t have big plans. It was mostly a tribute to Joe, a chance to bring his music back out of the house again and into dance halls and public places. They called themselves The Chocolate Drops as a tip of the hat to the Tennessee Chocolate Drops, three black brothers Howard, Martin and Bogan Armstrong, who lit up the music scene in the 1930’s. Honing and experimenting with Joe’s repertoire, the band often coaxed their teacher out of the house to join them on stage. Joe’s charisma and charm regularly stole the show. Being young and living in the 21st century, the Chocolate Drops first hooked up through a yahoo group, Black Banjo: Then and Now (BBT&N) hosted by Tom Thomas and Sule Greg Wilson. Dom was still living in Arizona, but in April 2005, when the web-chat spawned the Black Banjo Gathering in Asheville, N.C., he flew east and ended moving to the Piedmont where he could get at the music first hand. Joe Thompson’s house was the proof in the pudding |

Rose State Performing Arts Theatre Presenter: OK Mozart Show Dates:

The term "silent film" is really a misnomer, for films of the era prior to the advent of the "talkies" were always accompanied by music. Composers wrote scores for silent films that might be played by an entire live orchestra, and even at a small neighborhood theater an organist or piano player would improvise an accompaniment to the onscreen action. Boston's Alloy Orchestra is an ensemble that creates and performs its own live accompaniments to silent films. Although they have forged a new and innovative sound marked by the use of discarded objects for musical instruments, their music blends in with the films they accompany. "I've had people come up afterwards and say, 'I got so involved in the film, I forgot that you guys were there playing live,'" founding keyboardist Caleb Sampson told the Rocky Mountain News. "That's when we know we've done our job right." |

OKC Civic Center Music Hall - Oklahoma City Presenter: BLAC, Inc. Show Date:
June 2 | 7:30 p.m.
For nearly two decades, the world at large knew precisely where to find the acclaimed guitarist Kevin Eubanks. For five nights a week, Eubanks was cranking up the band and issuing steamy solos as music director on NBC’s “Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” In spring of 2010, after 18 years on the job, Eubanks decided to move on, although retirement was the last thing on his mind. That much is clearly stated in potent musical terms on Zen Food, his first recording for the Mack Avenue label. The title of the album is more than a piece of wordplay for Eubanks. “I think it’s a wonderful thing to acknowledge music as being food for your soul. The whole idea of it being Zen is that it’s a state of ‘being,’ not an ambition to become something else. It’s realizing everyone’s fingerprint is unique and expressing that uniqueness with sound, with ideas, with music. It’s all the same thing. It’s just another source of nutrition.”

Liszt's audiences went nuts -- fighting over his discarded cigar butts and gloves. And Shostakovich was subject to the insanity of the Soviet regime. Dirty Laundry by Oklahoma-playwright Ranell Collins explores the emotional and familial complexities of the sandwich generation. It centers around 54-year-old Ruth, a divorcee struggling to cope with life as she finds herself having to care for her terminally ill mother, Jenny. Ruth’s 30-something son, a drifter who takes advantage of his mother’s vulnerability, completes the generational sandwich with his own lack of willingness to support or provide assistance to the family. The play chronicles Ruth’s inner turmoil as she strives to carve out some semblance of happiness for herself while dealing with the guilt and resentment she feels towards her situation. | November 09 Straight No Chaser
Rose State Performing Arts Theater Presenter: AEG Live Show Date:
November 9 7:30pm
If the phrase "male a cappella group" conjures up an image of students in blue blazers, ties, and khakis singing traditional college songs on ivied campuses... think again. Straight No Chaser (SNC) are neither strait-laced nor straight-faced, but neither are they vaudeville-style kitsch. Originally formed over a dozen years ago while students together at Indiana University, the group has reassembled and reemerged as a phenomenon – with a massive fanbase, over 20 million views on YouTube, numerous national TV appearances, and proven success with two holiday releases, 2008’s “Holiday Spirits” and 2009’s “Christmas Cheers”, and their newly released first non-holiday album “With a Twist.” |
 | November 06 The Diary of Black Men
Rose State Performing Arts Theatre Show Date:
November 6 | 7:00 p.m.
THIS SHOW HAS BEEN CANCELED!
The phenomenon known as “The Diary of Black Men” is an exciting and tantalizing theatrical production that has played to sold-out audiences in the U. S. and United Kingdom `for nearly a quarter century. Written by Houstonian Thomas Meloncon, this choreopoem has stood the test of time and is the longest touring and most successful stage play in Black theatre history. “They were spellbound in New York. Emotions ran high in Chicago, the audience begged for more in Philadelphia, Los Angeles and Washington D.C. The acting is raw and powerful! There will be tears, laughter, anger, and joy. The plays subtitle “How do you love a Black woman?” provokes thoughts of a historical nature and magnitude. Originally penned in the late 70’s, this newly updated version addresses the issues of love, trust and black family values that have long been discussed cross-culturally, by economists, politicians, theologians, social scientists and the like, thus making the black man, in the words of Mr. Meloncon, “…the most talked about animal in America.” This observation could very well be the catalyst that has consistently packed venues in every corner of this country and abroad. The play attempts to address that statement and the aforementioned question of black love through a series of vignettes and scenarios examining the relationships between Black men and women using six male stereotypes: The Player, a Blue Collar Worker, a Militant, an Urban Professional and Intellect, a Black Muslim, and a Pimp. “I’m the most talked about man in America…the black man. Haunted and backed up against the wall by researchers and writers…” - Excerpt from The Diary of Black Men |

 | October 28 Smokie Norful
THIS SHOW HAS BEEN CANCELLED PLEASE CALL 405-297-2264 FOR FURTHER ASSISTANCE
With his soulful tenor vocals and an unerring ability to fuse contemporary gospel with hip-hop sensibilities, Smokie Norful is one of the brightest lights on the current gospel scene. The son of an African Methodist Episcopal minister, Norful spent his first 14 years in Muskogee, OK, where he absorbed music ranging from sacred gospel to the secular soul that was popular at the time, and both strains would serve him well when he began his professional singing career. By the age of two he was picking out melodies on piano, by four he was actively playing and singing in his father's church, and by ten he was a featured artist on a custom album assembled by a regional music director. Although music was his enduring passion, Norful instead opted to study history at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, eventually working as a history instructor for four years before relocating to Chicago in 1998 in order to earn a Masters of Divinity degree from Garrett Theological Seminary.
After his graduation, Norful remained in Chicago as an assistant pastor at the Rock of Ages Baptist Church and stayed active in various church choirs, eventually catching the ear of Joe Anne Brunson, leader of the Thompson Community Choir, who asked him to sing one of his original songs for the choir's Real album, which essentially launched Norful's professional singing career. His debut solo album, I Need You Now, was released by Chordant in 2002, followed by a live album called Limited Edition from EMI Gospel in 2003. Norful has characterized his music as "urban inspirational," an apt term that allows him to stretch the boundaries of traditional gospel while still remaining true to its purpose. EMI Gospel also released Norful's second solo album, Nothing Without You, in 2004. Life Changing appeared in 2006, and in 2009, EMI Gospel released Smokie Norful Live. |

Presenter: Canterbury Choral Society Show Dates: Oct. 2 at 8 p.m.
This fiery performance tells the story of the famous prophet in the Bible, Elijah. Through the style of an oratorio, the story is told much like an opera through orchestra, chorus and soloists all representing the characters in the drama. Intense dramatic scenes such as the "contest of the gods" and Elijah being taken into heaven on a chariot of fire are vividly conveyed through music.
With the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and sung in English, this choral experience ends with a message of hope for all people in our time. |
 | September 23 Wait, Wait ... Don't Tell Me!
OKC Civic Center Music Hall - Oklahoma City Thelma Gaylord Performing Arts Theatre Presenter: Public Radio KOSU 91.7 FM Show Dates: Sept. 23 at 7:30 p.m. NPR's Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me! takes a fast-paced, irreverent look at the news of the world -- and the weird. Now in its tenth year, the show offers a modern and sometimes raucous twist on the old-time radio quiz show, mining NPR news stories for quiz questions. The host is Peter Sagal, who is an award-winning playwright and father of three in his spare time. Legendary NPR newscaster Carl Kasell is the show's official judge and scorekeeper. Each week, Sagal quizzes the panelists and listeners to determine just how closely they paid attention to the week's news. He serves up questions in all forms: lightning rounds, tape from NPR news shows, multiple choice, identify the "fake" stories, and fill-in-the-blank limericks. Listeners call 888-WAIT-WAIT for a chance to win the most coveted prize in all of public radio: a custom-recorded greeting by Carl Kasell for their home's answering machine or voicemail.
One of the most popular segments is "Who's Carl This Time?," in which Kasell recites quotes from the week's newsmakers as contestants guess who he is impersonating. "This is the only show where you'll get to hear NPR's most senior newscaster impersonate Britney Spears," the Wait Wait producers say. Another signature Wait Wait…Don't Tell Me! game, "Not My Job," invites well-known celebrities to answer questions that are out -- way out -- of their area of expertise.
A rotating trio of witty panelists completes the Wait Wait team. They include author and humorist Roy Blount, Jr., advice columnist Amy Dickinson, Washington Post columnist Roxanne Roberts, writer/performer Adam Felber, author P.J. O'Rourke, comedian Paula Poundstone and humorist/pundit Mo Rocca.
Wait Wait...Don’t Tell Me! is a co-production of NPR and Chicago Public Radio. The program, created by the same folks who produce Car Talk, debuted nationally in 1998 and quickly established itself as one of public radio's favorite weekend programs. |
